Selection Criteria

AS you explore environmental resources on the Web, it is important to know your information sources are reliable, accurate, and timely.  Because some environmental issues are controversial, you should be sure that information you use is as accurate as possible and can be verified by other trusted sources.  Since Web resources change frequently, you should also be sure you are looking at the most current materials.  The sites included in this guide were selected using the following criteria:

bulletThe Web site publisher is clearly identified and can be contacted from the site.
bulletThe Web site's purpose is stated in writing and is obvious when looking at the content.
bulletThe information provided is comprehensive or uniquely important in environmental studies. 
bulletThe Web site is well known in the environmental resources community.
bulletIt is cited in multiple subject resources, both print and online.
bulletThe information provided is current and regularly updated.  Revision dates are posted on the site.
bulletThe Web site is well organized and easy to use.  Multimedia features enhance, rather than distract from the content offerings.

Learn about natural resources and environmental issues affecting our National Parks, along with Park Service statistics and educational resources for students and teachers.

This site provides statistics and information on federal environmental laws and regulations as well as educational resources.
bulletUSDA Forest Service
Investigate current environmental issues affecting state and national forests.  Contains links to conservation education materials, forest management reports, and forest health research.

This site gives you a look at the environment through physical science, including links to satellite maps, geology and paleontology research, and a geologic time machine.

Offers the GreenCOM Resource Library, a searchable database of curricular materials and classroom activities for use by K-12 teachers and students.
bulletEnvironmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute (EOHSI)
Based at Rutgers University, EOHSI is one of the nation's leading environmental research and education facilities.  This site contains links to curriculum, teacher training programs, and conference listings.
bulletThe Wild Ones--A Children's Education Project
Contains links to a global network of children, teachers, and conservation workers, who share stories of endangered species throughout the world.  Information is available in English and Spanish.
