Let's Talk About It

The library tries to stay up-to-date with the latest technology. We have a variety of different computer programs for use.  We currently have two new Gates computers and a laser printer given to us through grants from the Redfield foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.  We also have one other older computer set up with internet and software programs.

bulletInternet -- We have three computers available for Internet use. Our internet system is wireless and so it is fast and there are no busy signals.  
bulletYou may download files on disks.  You may bring them in or we have them for sale for $1.00 ea.  
bulletThere is no charge for Internet use, however, copies printed out from the Internet are $.10 per sheet for black and white, $1.00 per sheet for color. 
bullet Internet Policy should be read and understood before using.
bulletPatron's who are under the age of 18 must have parent's written permission before using the Internet. We do not police Internet use. If you want to know what your child is accessing on the Internet, sit by his/her side.
bulletTime is limited to 30 minutes unless there are no patrons waiting to use the Internet.
bulletComputer Software  -- Currently we have three computers for use with word processing, spread sheet, desktop publishing, etc.  There is no charge for computer use, just the same charges as above for printouts. 
bulletThe Gates Foundation has provided a "BIGPRINT" screen for those who might be visually impaired.  This increases the screen size considerably to allow easier reading of the programs on the computer.  Those programs with an * beside them are available in the "BIGPRINT."  
bulletWe can also lock children out of the Internet and just provide the screen of children's programs if the parents wish.  All of the Children's programs are available to them, but not the Internet Explorer.

bulletInternet Explorer 5*
Internet Explorer is a Web browser.  It displays content from sites on the World Wide Web -- text, graphics, and other media -- that is made available on the internet.  Web sites provide access to current news, world events, employment and government information, and a wide variety of other information that may not be available in print form at some libraries.
bulletMouse Tutorial
The Mouse Tutorial is a self guided introduction to use of the mouse and many of the common elements of Windows programs.  Designed for first-tiem computer users, the Mouse Tutorial will enable them to get started using the library's computers.
bulletOffice Programs:
bulletWord 2000*
Word is a word processor you can use to create and print documents, such as letters, resumes and school papers.  Additionally, Word is equipped with templates and wizards that include set formatting to make the creation of resumes, business letters, and fax cover sheets quick and easy.  Advanced features, such as tables and clip art, allow you to create professional-looking documents with custom graphics.
bulletExcel 2000*
Excel is a spreadsheet program.  You can use it to work with numbers and other data in rows and columns.  Excel can general graphs and charts based on you data.  Examples of documents you can create with Excel are budget reports and income statements.  Excel can use data to perform sums, averages, and other mathematical evaluations and print customized reports.
bulletPublisher 2000*
Publisher helps novice computer users design and print distinctive publications, such as greeting cards, brochures, banners, and flyers.  You can choose from may pre-made designs or design your own pictures and text.  Publisher is a good choice for creating documents with complicated layouts and lots of pictures.  If you are typing a document that has only text, like a letter or resume, Word is a better choice.
bulletPowerPoint 2000*
Teachers, public speakers, and others can use PowerPoint to organize information on slides, handouts, overheads or on-screen presentations.  PowerPoint offers a wide variety of colored backgrounds, animation, and other graphical features to make you presentation visually interesting.

bulletReference Programs:
bulletWorld English Dictionary 2000*
More than just a dictionary, World English Dictionary is an electronic "desk reference library."  Its reference features include:  word definitions, synonyms, quotations, definitions of computer terminology, world maps, facts and figures, and a style guide.  Unlike print books, World English Dictionary has the features of sound, images, videos and animations.  In addition, you can specify to search for information in all these features at once or one at a time.
bulletEncarta Encyclopedia 2000*
Encarta Encyclopedia is a reference tool that enhances basic encyclopedia articles with multimedia features:  pictures, sounds, videos, and animation.  Using Encarta is not linear, like paging through a book.  Instead, you can link to related topics and jump to other articles with a click of the mouse.  In this way, Encarta encourages and enhances through exploration of topics.  Encarta also provides links to relevant Web pages.

Encarta Africana is an interactive reference program that examines the legacy of the African Diaspora by focusing on the histories, cultures, and geographies of Africa and people of African descent.  The videos, sounds, pictures, maps and virtual tours in the encyclopedia enables users to explore expressive traditions -- such as music, dance, art, and storytelling -- central to learning and understanding African heritage.
bulletEncarta Research Organizer 2000
Encarta Research Organizer helps structure information from a variety of computer-based sources for use in term papers, reports, and other research projects.  Once you have your research organized onto Research Organizer's note cards and arrange the note cards in an outline, you can export your work to a word processor for writing, revision, and printing.
bulletWorld Atlas 2000*
Word Atlas is a multimedia world atlas and globe.  You can view different scale maps of the world, and you can also access content like photos, videos, music clips, and statistics about countries and cultures.  World Atlas allows you to explore many aspects of a country, from geography and culture to interesting facts and statistics.
bulletExpedia Streets & Trips 2000
Microsoft Expedia Streets & Trips 2000 is a travel guide and detailed atlas of the United States, Mexico, and Canada that can locate on street maps specific addresses, cities, states, airports, National Parks and a variety of other points of interest.  The program not only locates but also provides information about places on the maps, from restaurant reviews to pictures of local attractions.  In addition, Streets & Trips 2000 can help you plan customized automobile trips, providing detailed driving instructions, maps with your route highlighted, distance, and estimated fuel and mileage costs.
bulletCorbis Franklin Delano Roosevelt
Corbis FDR is an interactive multimedia program examining the life and presidency of FDR.  This virtual museum tour includes video presentations and slide shows, speeches and sound clips designed to educate and entertain.

The Arthur programs, designed for children aged 4 and up, help kids develop problem solving, math, and reading skills through a variety of challenging games and activities.

The Barney programs offer an interactive presentation of basic concepts for children from the preschool to second grade levels.  The learning activities, presented by the cast of the Barney television show, reinforce concepts learned at the early elementary level, such as sorting, following directions, and identifying animals, colors, and letters.

The Dr. Seuss programs, designed for children aged 3-8, are interactive, multimedia versions of the popular books.  guided through the stories by visual and sound clues, children build computer familiarity and reading skills in an entertaining setting.

The Magic School Bus programs, intended for children ages 6-10, combine educational and entertainment features.  Each program has a story line that encourages children to explore the program.  The games are mouse-driven, interactive adventures in which children are challenged o find a missing object.  In Rainforest, the goal is to find missing "bloclones."  In Earth, it's missing rock samples, and in Dinosaurs, it's missing dinosaur photos.  Each program combines activities for learning with games just for fun.

The story programs are interactive, multimedia presentation including opportunities for reading practice, activities, and games.  Children can choose to have stories read or to play on the play pages.  these programs are good choice for first-time computer users, as the story options are entertaining and easy to use.

Stellaluna is a children's program designed to encourage exploration and learning.  The interactive screens allow children to choose to listen to a narrated story or to interact with the story by clicking responsive elements within the program.  Children are also challenged by games that help build word shape recognition, reading comprehension, and computer literacy.

bulletBig Science Ideas:  Systems
In three simulations kids explore various science systems.  They'll experiment with the small-scale system of a toilet, a mid-size system of a pond-ecosystem, and a huge size system of the earth's plate tectonics.  Along the way, they are encouraged to record, graph and analyze data.  Also includes puzzles and activities.
bulletSuccess Builder:  Algebra 1 and Geometry
The Success Builder programs teach algebra and geometry skills.  They are both divided into 12 chapters, contain over 50 in-depth topics, and offer more than 500 multiple-choice practice problems.
