There are many different kinds of searches available on the card catalog.  Some of the search instructions are found in the table below.  An exercise in searching can be found at the bottom of the table.

Searching the Online Card Catalog

The Online Card Catalog Home Screen contains the following:

Library Search

This is a home key that can be used to clear your search and start over. When ever you want to get to the main screen, the Library Search Key will get you there. Library Search is your beginning and starting-over point.

Events

The Events tab is a place to go to find out local library events such as board meetings and story hours.

Quick Links

These are links to other libraries for interlibrary loans and to see their collections. Just click on a link and it takes you to the card catalog of the library listed. More information and a broadcast search will be available as the South Eastern Idaho Library Consortium (of which we are a member) goes online.

Keyword Search

A keyword search is just a simple word or phrase search.

bulletExample of Keyword Search: 
bulletType in word or phrase -- mountain m*n
bullet(The * between the m and n is a wild card character that will make sure the search will include both "a" and "e" , i.e.   "man" and "men"
bulletClick on Keyword
bulletResults will appear on the page

Power Search

Power Searching allows you to combine words and phrases or leave out words to do a more detailed search of your subject.

bulletClick on the Power Search Key to bring up the power search screen
bulletExample: If you want to know all about Stegosaurus Dinosaurs do the following:
bulletClick on the Power button
bullettype dinosaurs in the top box
bulletmake sure AND has a button beside it
bullettype steg* in the next box (steg* will make sure that all items with dinosaurs and any form of the word that includes the first four letters steg will be included
bulletClick on "Find It"

Results: All books with stegosaurus dinosaurs appear in a list

A power search that you want to omit some words would be as follows:

bulletExample: You want to search cowboys, but you do not want any reference to the "Dallas Cowboys" football team.
bulletClick on Power Search
bullettype cowboys in the top box
bulletclick but not
bullettype Dallas in the second box
bulletclick on the "Find It"

Results: All items that have to do with cowboys, but not Dallas Cowboys

Title Search

Enter the title you want in the "Enter search words:"
Example: Where the Red Fern Grows
Click on title.
After the title search results appear
Information on the screen then tells you about your search:
Type of item
bulletThe title of "Where the Red Fern Grows" there are three different types of the item:
bulletVideo
bulletTape
bulletBook
Title
Author
Call Number
Status

Individual Titles

bulletTo find out about the book your searching click on the title and a screen comes up that tells you about the book you have searched. (Any part of the screen that is "hyperlinked" (underlined and colored) will take you to further information about that hyperlink)
bulletClicking on the title will take you to detailed information about that title.
bulletAuthor will take you to the other books by the author.
bulletSubject will take you to a list of all books with that subject.

Subject Search

bulletType in the subject you would like to search in the "Enter Search Word" box
bulletExample: Enter "Detective and Mystery Stories" and then click on subject
bulletResults tell how many items can be found under that subject.
bulletClick on the "hyperlink" of "Detective and mystery stories" to get the individuals titles in that subject
bulletResults show all items with that subject

Series Search

To find your favorite items in a series type in the name of the series in the "Enter Search Words" box
Click on Series
Example: Work and the Glory
When the Result page comes up then you can click on the Series you want for individual titles.

bulletResults are individual titles 

 

Call Number Search

bulletTo search for a group of items such as Videos, Books on Tape, Magazines, Music CD’s etc., type in the call number in the "Enter Search Words" box.
bulletExample: VCR will show you a list of all Videos in the library
bulletSome call numbers for the OCL include:
bulletDewey Decimal No. = Adult non fiction
bulletDewey Decimal No. J = Juvenile non fiction
bulletJ = Juvenile Fiction
bulletJ PB = Juvenile Fiction in Paperback
bulletE = Easy
bulletER = Easy Reader
bulletF = Adult Fiction
bulletF PB = Adult Fiction in Paperback
bulletF LDS = LDS Fiction
bulletSS = Short Stories
bulletYA = Young Adult
bulletCD = Music Cd’s
bulletTape = Books on tape
bulletVCR = Videos
bulletMag = Magazines
bulletREF = Reference Materials
bulletPAM = Pamphlet File

Limiters

bulletLimiters allow you to decide which items you want within your search.

Accelerated Reading Book Search

bulletTo search AR books click on the AR button.

bulletFill in the From box with the Reading Level desired.
bulletFill in the point value range
bulletSubject and Author boxes are optional

Results include:

bulletAuthor
bulletReading Level
bulletPoint Value
bulletCall Number
bulletStatus

Bookbag

bulletThe bookbag is a feature that allows you to keep track of books you have found and are interested in. After finding the title you want click on the "Add to Bookbag." 

Inside the Bookbag

bulletAny time in your search you can view or print out the items in your bookbag. You can also go to individual titles from the book bag and place a reserve or hold on that book.

To Reserve an Item

bulletTo make a reserve on any item you must be in the individual record of the item. There are three tabs on that screen:
bulletShow Copies
bulletShelf Browse
bulletHolds
bulletClick on the Hold button and an email screen will pop up.

The Email Screen

bulletThe email screen has The title, author and call number information at the top of the screen.
bulletSeveral blank boxes are below this information. Fill out the necessary boxes with information and click the send button. Your request has been sent to the library. To start a new search after your email has been sent hit the Library Search button.

The Help Key

bulletThe help key provides any help you might need moving around the online card catalog.
